Welcome to my blog!

This blog will be a place where I can post updates of things that are going on in my life as I prepare and actually leave to go to Peru. I will try to update regularly, especially when I'm on the field. If you want to respond to anything I post on here - or just say hi and let me know what is going on in your life - you can leave a comment and I will respond to you. When you comment, please identify yourself so I know who you are - otherwise it will come up on my screen as "anonymous". Thanks. Blessings!

More about PROMESA

PROMESA is the first bilingual Christian school in Cusco, Peru. It was begun by the Peruvian Mennonite Church, in cooperation with Eastern Mennonite Missions, in March of 2005. The school began with 11 kindergarten students and now contains about 250 students in grades K-8. Each year one grade will be added, through the end of high school.
The school is currently in its eighth school year. Some of the students come from the local Mennonite churches, while the other half come from other local churches and the community at large. Students come from a variety of socioeconomic situations and many receive scholarships to attend the school. The students come from both Latin American and Inca Indian cultural backgrounds. A few students also have English or American backgrounds.
The school day begins with a short devotional time for all the students. The students then spend the rest of their instructional day divided between Spanish and English instruction. Both Peruvians and Americans teach at the school.

Just for fun: tips to the wise collected from the journey

After you get a vaccination, gently rub the injection site several times over the course of the day. Not only will this help the vaccine to circulate better, but it will also cut down on the amount of soreness you experience.

Don't cook chickpeas (garbanzo beans) for too long or they will get sweet. Strange, yes.

I am not a tourist. My aversion to being given this label is somewhat akin to Anne of Green Gables' aversion to being called Carrots.

Icing covers over a multitude of (baking) sins.

If your mixer has only one speed - recklessly fast - don´t use it to make whipped cream!

When cooking over a wood fire, rub mud on the outside of your cooking pot in order to keep it from turning black in the fire.
